Marriage

The preparation for marriage starts with a meeting with Father Kusi. To set up an appointment, you may contact him at kusi@saintsjcc.org

The process for marriage preparation is a well designed and fruitful experience here in the Diocese of Lansing, which generally take 9-12 months to complete.

The process begins with an initial meeting with the priest. This meeting is followed by working through the following requirements:

  1. FOCCUS (Facilitating Open Couple Communication, Understanding and Study) is a self diagnostic instrument designed to help couples learn more about themselves and their unique relationship.
  2. Communications skills seminar called "We Care" is a 2 day seminar teaching couples positive communication and conflict management skills.
  3. Catholic Information Series, a 4 week series on the Catholic Faith and how you are called to live out your marriage covenant.
  4. Course in Natural Family Planning (NFP), a highly effective scientific method of planning your family, both for achieving and postponing pregnancy.
Optional elements in the process may include Engaged Encounter or Remarriage Seminar, depending on individual circumstances. As the wedding day approaches (generally a month before the wedding) the couple meets with pastor to review the preparation process, and plan specific elements of the liturgy and wedding celebration. For further information on the sacrament of Matrimony and how to help ensure a strong and lasting marriage, please consider visiting For Your Marriage, an outreach offered by the USCCB.
